See Your Own Fingerprints!

Have you ever looked really closely at your fingertips and noticed that they're covered in little bumps and ridges? Those are your fingerprints, a unique part of your body that helps make you... you!

Tips for Parents

  • Here's how to talk to your child about it

You learned that your fingertips have unique patterns called fingerprints. These patterns stay the same throughout your life and can leave marks on surfaces. Fingerprints help identify people and can be used to solve crimes.

  • Some activities you can do with your child now

    - Create a fingerprint art project: Use washable ink pads and white paper to create different fingerprint shapes and patterns. - Play a detective game: Use household items and have your child leave their fingerprints on objects around the house. Then, challenge them to find the objects based on the fingerprints left behind. - Explore different fingerprint patterns: Use a magnifying glass to examine the patterns on your child's fingertips and compare them to the three main patterns mentioned in the video (arch, loop, and whorl). - Discuss the uniqueness of fingerprints: Talk to your child about how everyone has different fingerprints and how they can be used to identify people, like in solving crimes.

  • Pretend play with your child

GAME: "Fingerprint Detective" Instructions: Grab a pencil, white paper, and clear tape. Tear off a piece of tape and place it sticky side up. Make a dark spot on the paper with the pencil. Rub your finger on your forehead for extra oil, then press your finger onto the pencil spot. Press your finger onto the tape and peel it off. Stick the tape onto the clean side of the paper. See your unique fingerprint pattern and compare it to the three main patterns: arch, loop, and whorl. Discuss how everyone's fingerprints are different and special, like a detective!
